Your name is a part of your identity and, therefore, it should be permanent. This means that it should not be changed without good reason. However, under certain circumstances you and your parents may change your name.

Up to 16 years of age

Before you have reached 16 years of age, your parents may decide to change your name according to the Family Code and Law on civil status documents.

If you have not reached 16 years of age, your application should be submitted by both of your parents or your legal guardian. If you reach 10 years old than your opinion should be taken into consideration on a compulsory basis.

After 16 years of age

If you have reached 16 years of age, you have the right to change your name. You have to bear in mind that this can only be done in accordance with procedure provided in the Family Code and the Law on civil status documents.

This may happen if your name is too eccentric or offensive and you feel ashamed of it. If you want to change your name you should submit an application to the Civil Status Office. You should write the name which you have chosen as your new name. Remember that you also have to follow the general requirements for choosing a name.

You should ask your parents for help if you need any advice on how to prepare and file the application. You may also go to the Civil Status Office and ask for their advice.

The local guardian authority is a state authority which knows how to protect your best interests and rights in all situations. It can help you and your parents to settle the dispute about the change of your name and provide counselling if you need it.
